A CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ SIMPLE PAST TENSE MASTERY AND THEIR LEARNING MOTIVATION TOWARD THEIR ABILITY TO COMPREHEND RECOUNT TEXT ON GRADE X STUDENTS AT SMA NEGERI 5 PADANG

Abstract
This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ simple past tense mastery and their learning motivation toward their ability to comprehend recount text on grade X students at SMA Negeri 5 Padang.The number of population was 279 students.The researcher took two classes as sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The classes selected as sample were classes X 7 and X 9. The researcher gathered the data by using simple past tense, questionnaire and reading test. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Multiple Correlation Formula.
After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the students’ simple past tense mastery was moderate (60.71%), their learning motivation was moderate (78.6%), and their ability to comprehend recount text was moderate (78.6%). The researcher found the coeffficient correlation between students’ simple past tense mastery and their ability to comprehend recount text was .93 and value of r table was .388(α .05 and df = 26). Next, the researcher found the coeffficient correlation between students’ lerning motivation and their ability to comprehend recount text was .86 and value of r table was .388(α .05 and df = 26). Then, the researcher found the coeffficient correlation between students’ simple past tense mastery and their learning motivation was .89 and value of r table was .388(α .05 and df = 26). Finaly, the researcher found the value of coefficient correlation of three variables was .93 and f- counted was 9.60, while the value of f- table was 3.39 (α .05) (df) n-k-1 (25).
