AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN ADMITTING AND DENYING FACTS AT SMP PERTIWI 2 PADANG

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the second grade students’ speaking ability in admitting and denying facts. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMP Pertiwi 2 Padang Academic Year 2015/2016 (114 students). The researcher used cluster simple random sampling to select the sample. The total number of sample was 24 students; class VIII1 (6 students), VIII2 (6 students), VIII3 (6 students), and VIII4 (6 students). The researcher used inter rater technique to make test reliable. The result of the test was reliable with coefficient correlation .86. It was categorized as very high correlation. Generally, the result of analyzing data showed that the ability of the second grade students in admitting and denying facts was moderate; 2 students (8.33%) had high ability, 20 students (83.34%) had moderate ability and 2 students (8.33%) had low ability. In more specific it can be concluded that 22 students (91.67%) had moderate ability in organizing idea (content), 15 students (62.5%) had moderate ability in using grammar, 17 students (70.83%) had moderate ability in appropriate vocabulary, 15 students (62.5%) had moderate ability in terms of fluency, and 14 students (58.33%) had moderate ability in terms of pronunciation. Based on the result, the researcher gives suggestions to teachers to explain and review about material of expression; to the students to study harder and do more practice in speaking; to the further researcher to analyze the factors which cause the students had moderate ability in admitting and denying facts.
