AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING SIMPLE SENTENCES USING LINKING VERB AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENTOF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out grammatical errors made by the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in writing simple sentences using linking verb. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population members was 48 students. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample. The instrument used to get the data was writing test.It was found that the reliability index of the test was very high (.99). Then, the test was valid in terms of content validity. From the result of the research, generally the second year student at English Department of Bung Hatta University made grammatical error in writing simple sentences using linking verb. It was proved by the fact that there were 54 (53%) errors in omission, 42 (42%) errors in addition, 4 (4%) errors in misformation, and 1 (1%) errors in misordering. Specifically, the researcher found that there were 35 (65%) omission of article, 12 (22%) omission of –s. 7 (13%) omission of plural form, 28 (66%) addition of linking verb, 7 (17%) addition of –s. 7 (17%) addition of article, 2 (50%) misformation of article, 2 (50%) misformation of linking verb, 1 (100%) misordering of adjective, and 0 (0%) misordering of linking verb. Referring to the results of this research, the researcher suggeststhe lecturers to give more emphasis and exercises about linking verb. The researcher suggests the second year students to improve their skill in writing simple sentences especially in using linking verb.Then, further researchers are expected to find and analyze the factors which cause the students’ errors in writing simple sentences using linking verb.
