AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN DESCRIBING FAMILY LIFE AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe the students’ ability in describing family life. The design of this research was descriptive. The number of population members of this research was 23 students. The researcher used Simple random sampling technique. The result of data analysis revealed that the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had ability in describing family life. Based on the result of data analysis, it was indicated that the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University Padang in general was moderate. It was proved by the evidence that there were 60.87 % students classified into moderate ability in describing family life, 65.22 % students classified into moderate criteria in organizing idea (content), 78.26 % students classified into moderate criteria in using grammar, 52.17 % students classified into moderate criteria in appropriate vocabulary, 60.87 % students classified into moderate criteria in terms of fluency, and 65.22 % students classified into moderate criteria in terms of pronunciation. Relating to this conclusion, the lecturers are suggested to improve the students’ speaking ability through doing more practice by giving the students exercise about describing family life in describing family life. The students are suggested to improve their speaking ability in describing family life in using grammar, to use appropriate vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency through more practice in speaking. The further researchers are suggested to study about some factors that cause the students’ ability in speaking is moderate.
