AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING SIMPLE SENTENCES USING ADJECTIVE WITH –ED AND –ING ENDING AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out grammatical errors made by the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in writing simple sentences using adjective with –ed and –ing ending in form of simple present tense and simple past tense. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population members was 54 students. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample. The instrument used to get the data was writing test. It was found that the reliability index of the test was very high (0.93). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity. The result of this research showed that in general the third year student as English Department of Bung Hatta University made grammatical errors in writing simple sentences using adjective with –ed and –ing ending. It was proved by the fact that there were 57 (28%) omission errors, 10 (5%) addition errors, 135 (66%) misformation errors, and 1 (1%) misordering errors. Referring to the result of this research, the researcher concluded that the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had the highest percentage of errors in writing simple sentences using adjective with –ed and –ing ending was misformation of preposition was 52 (38%) errors of total errors. The researcher suggested to the lecturers to give more emphasis on the use of preposition in a sentences, and exercise about formation of adjective with –ed and –ing ending. The researcher suggested to the students to improve their skill in writing simple sentences especially in adjective with –ed and –ing ending. The further researchers are expected to find and analyze the factors which cause the students made errors in writing simple sentences using adjective with –ed and –ing ending.
