TEACHING WRITING SENTENCE BY USING SENTENCE COMBINING EXERCISES

Abstrak

English as an International Language has been used as a tool of communication over the world. It is used both in spoken and written form. In Indonesia English has been taught since Junior high school up to University. It becomes one of the major subjects. Beside that, English now takes an important role in every form of life. In junior high school, based on the experience and observation during practice teaching, the students did not understand or had difficulty in learning English. The purpose of writing this is to share ideas about the use of combining sentence exercises in teaching writing. For example, when they were given writing task, they found difficulties. Sometimes, they made a lot of mistakes on spealling and grammar and they could not combine the sentence well. Combining exercise is very crucial problem to the students. In teaching writing by using combine exercises can use Direct Instruction Approuch because Direct Instruction is a straightforward way to teach skills. In this case the students have to understand how to combine sentences so that the sentences unity each other. The unity in the sentences will influence that ideas expressed in the text. Therefore, the writer proposes that students should study the way to combine sentence. Sentence combining exercises do not only give students using a range of syntactic structure, but also leads to over all improvement such as grammatical correctness, sentence variety, and even organization and cohesion and can make students easier in contracting coherent paragraph.
