AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING EXPOSITORY PRAGRAPH AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the third year students in writing expository paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive in nature. The population of this research was 54 students. In selecting the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. The instrument of the research was writing test in form of paragraph. It was found that the test was reliable. The result of the data analysis showed that the third year students’ ability of Bung Hatta University was moderate. It was proved by the fact that there were 45 students (84%) got moderate ability in organizing ideas. There were 27 students (50%) got moderate ability in using vocabulary. There were 37 students (68%) got moderate ability in using grammar. There were 50 students (93%) got moderate ability in applying mechanics. Based on the result of the research, the students are expected to learn more and do more exercises in writing expository paragraph.
