AN ANALYSIS OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN APLLYING SIMPLE SENTENCE IN PAST TENSE IN WRITING A PERSONAL RECOUNT TEXT AT SMAN 13 PADANG

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to know the tenth grade students’ ability in applying simple sentence in past tense in writing a personal recount text. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was 283 students. They were divided into nine classes: X.1, X.2, X.3, X.4, X.5, X.6, X.7, X.8, and X.9. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample and there were 61 students as the sample. The instrument used to collect data in this research was writing test. The time given was 90 minutes. This research used inter-rater method (two scorers) in order to find the reliability of the test. It means that the reliability index of this test was .97. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ ability was low. It was proved by the fact that 43 students (70.49%) were categorized into having low ability and 18 students (29.51%) were categorized into having high ability
