AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the third year students’ ability in writing argumentative essay at English Department Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the third year students of English Department of Faculty Teacher Training and Education at Bung Hatta University. The number of population members was 48 students. To select the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. In general, the result of the data analysis revealed that 62.5% of the third year students of English Department Bung Hatta University had good ability in writing argumentative essay. Specifically, 30% of them had very good ability and 30% of them had moderate ability in writing content in argumentative essay, 60% of them had good ability in using appropriate words in writing argumentative essay, 57.5% had good ability in using grammar in writing argumentative essay, and 87.5% had good ability in using mechanics in writing argumentative essay. Finally, based on the findings, it could be concluded that many students of the third year students of English Department Bung Hatta University still had problem in writing argumentative essay. Consequently, it is suggested to English teachers who teach writing to give students more explanation and exercises about argumentative essay to improve their skills. The students are suggested to learn more and to do more exercises in order to improve their ability in writing argumentative essay.
