AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY TO GET THE ESSENTIAL INFORMATION FROM THE PASSAGE AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out students’ ability to get the essential information from the passage. The design of this research was descriptive. The total sample members were 47 students, they were chosen by using total sampling technique. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability at English Department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information from passage in general was low. It was proved that 70.21 % students had low category. Furthermore, students’ ability to get the essential information by using question who was low. It was proved that 48.93 students had low category. Then, by using question when was good. It was proved that 31.91. % students had good category; by using question where was very good. It was proved that 57.44 % students had very good category; by using question what was low. It was proved that students had low category; by using question why was low. It was proved that students had low category; by using question how was low. It was proved that students had low category. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion for the lecturers, students, and the next researchers. The lecturers need to improve students’ ability to get the essential information from passage. The students should do more exercises about how to get the essential information. The last, the researcher suggested other researchers study about factors making students have some mistakes and find out the students’ difficulties in getting the essential information from the passage.
