AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY IN USING QUANTIFIER IN WRITING SIMPLE SENTENCES

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out the problems of the second year students at Bung Hatta University in using quantifier in writing simple sentences. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the second year students at Bung Hatta University. The number of population members was 32 students. To select the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. From the result of the data analysis, generally the researcher found out 51.85% students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in academic year 2016/2017 had problems in using quantifier in writing simple sentence. The researcher also found that 48.15% students had no problems. In using “few” 70.37% students had problems and 29.63% students had no problems. In using “a few” 74.07% students had problems and 25.93% students had no problems. In using “little” 70.37% students had problems and 29.63% students had no problems. In using “a little” 66.67% students had problems and 33.33% students had no problems. Finally, based on the findings, it could be concluded that many students of the second year students at Bung Hatta University still had problems in using quantifier in writing simple sentences. Consequently, the lecturers are suggested to minimize the students’ problems by giving good ways; such as giving more explanation, motivation and example in using quantifier in writing simple sentence. After students know their problems, they are suggested to find out some good ways to minimize their problems by getting more explanation, motivation and example. For the next researchers, it is suggested to study about some factors that cause students’ problems in using quantifier in writing simple sentence.
