AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN COMPREHENDING RECOUNT TEXT AT SMAN 1 SIBERUT SELATAN

Abstract
This research beginning from the problem of students’ ability in comprehending recount text at SAMN 1 Siberut Selatan. The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the second year student at SMAN 1 Siberut Selatan in comprehending personal recount text. The design of this research was quantitative research by using descriptive method. The number of population member members were 214. The researcher used stratified cluster random sampling to select the sample (XI 1PA 1 and XI 1PS 4). Total sample were 46 students. Instrument was reading test in recount text in form of multiple choices. The coefficient correlation of try out test was 0.93. In comprehending orientation, the highest score got by the students was 6, and the lowest score was 3, the highest score got by the students in comprehending series of event was 13, and the lowest score was 3. So, based on that data, students’ ability in comprehending personal recount text was moderate ability, it was supported by the data that 26 students (56%) from 46 students had moderate ability. Based on the finding, the students still had difficulties in comprehending orientation, event and reorientation of recount text, and it caused by the students vocabulary was lack. Finally, based on the result of this research, the researcher expect to the teacher should give more explanation and exercises in comprehending personal recount text.
