A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ READING HABIT AND THEIR MOTIVATION TOWARD THEIR READING COMPREHENSION OF ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

ABSTARACT

The purpose of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ reading habit and their motivation toward their reading comprehension of argumentative essay at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 49 students. The researcher took49 students as sample by using total  sampling technique.  The researcher gathered the data by using questionnaire to measure students’ reading habit and motivation, and reading test to measure students’ reading comprehension of argumentative essay. To analyze, the data the researcher Pearson Product Moment Formula and Double Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that students’ reading habit and motivation was classified as moderate, and reading comprehension of argumentative essay was also moderate. In addition, she found that the value of correlation coefficient between students reading habit and reading comprehension of argumentative essay was .45 and r-table was .281(α  0.05, (df)n-2), and the value of correlation coefficient between motivation and reading comprehension of argumentative essay was.02 and r-table was .281 (α  0.05, (df)n-2). She found that the value of correlation coefficient of f-counted was 12.02, and the value of f-table was 3.23 (α  0.05) and (df) n-k-1 (46). Learning from the results, it can be concluded there was a significant correlation between students’ reading habit and their motivation toward their reading comprehension of argumentative essay of the third year students English Department of Bung Hatta University. Related to the conclusion, it is suggested to the lecturers to improve students’ reading habit and their motivation in order to improve their reading comprehension.
