Abstract 

The purpose of this research was to describe students` speaking ability to use expression of likes and dislikes. In expression of likes and dislikes, we could express the things that someone likes and the thing someone does not like. The population of this research was the second grade students at SMPN 1 VII Koto Padang Pariaman. The sample members were 54 students, they were chosen by using Cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. The result of this research showed that the students’ speaking ability at SMPN 1 VII Koto Sei. Sariak to use expression likes and dislikes in general was high. It was proved by the finding that was 59.2% students had high ability. Refering to the results of this research, the researcher concluded that the ability of the second grade students` speaking ability to use expression of likes and dislikes was high. Dealing with the conclusion, English teachers can defend students` ability and also improve it. The students do practice more especially in content and pronunciation in speaking. The last, the researcher suggested other researchers  to find out the students` difficulties in expression of likes and dislikes in speaking.
