an analysis of eighth grade students’ speaking ability in asking, giving, and refusing help at smp pertiwi 2 padang

Abstract 

The purpose of this research was to describe students` speaking ability in expression of asking giving and refusing help. In expressing of asking giving and refusing help we can ask someone to do something and giving something or rejecting something. The population of this research was the eight grade student’ ability at SMP Pertiwi 2 Padang. The total sample members were 24 students, they were chosen by using Convinience sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. To make the test reliable, the reseacher used inter-rater technique. It means that there were two scorers to check students recording. It was found that the correlation coefficients was 0.78. It means that the test was reliable. Then the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of this research showed that the students’ speaking ability at SMP Pertiwi 2 Padang in general was high. It was proved by the finding that was 66.6% students who had high ability. Referring to the results of this research, the researcher concluded that the ability of the second grade students` speaking ability to use expression of asking giving and refusing help high. Dealing with the conclusion, English teachers can defend students` ability and also improve it. The students do practice more especially in pronunciation and fluency because the students have low ability for both aspects in speaking. The last, the researcher suggested other researchers  to find out the students` difficulties in expressing of asking giving and refusing help in speaking.
