AN ANALYSIS OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING A RECOUNT TEXT AT SMPN 1 BATANG ANAI

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe the ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Batang Anai in writing a recount text. The research design was descriptive, the population was the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Batang Anai in academic year 2016/2017. The number of the population members was 288 students. To take the sample the researcher used convenience sampling technique and class VIII.6 had been chosen as the sample of this research, and the size of the sample was 32 students. The instrumentation used to get the data was writing text. The researcher focused on writing recount text. To know the reliability of the test, the researcher used inter-rater technique. After that, the result of correlation coefficiency was analayzed by using person product moment formula. It was found that the reliability was 0,64 and it was categorized as high correlation. It means the test was reliable. The result of this study showed that in general the ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Batang Anai in writinga recount text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 23 students (71,875%) had moderate ability. The findings of this research lead the researcher to conclude that the eighth grade students’ ability at SMPN 1 Batang Anai in writing a recount text was moderate ability. The researcher suggested the students to improve their ability into good ability by doing more exercises in writing recount text.The English teacher is suggested to give more exercises to students to write recount text.
