AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS IN WRITING COMPLEX SENTENCES OF USING NON RESTRICTIVE AND RESTRICTIVE ADJECTIVE CLAUSE AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ problems at English Department of Bung Hatta University in using non restrictive and restrictive adjective clause in writing complex sentence. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in academic year 2016/2017. The total number of the population members was 47. The researcher used total sampling to select the sample. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater technique. The result was reliable. From the result, generally the researcher found out 55.3% students at English Department at Bung Hatta University had problems and 44.7% had no problem in writing complex sentences. The researcher also found 27,7% students had problem and 72.3% students had no problem in writing complex sentence by using non restrictive adjective clause. 0% student had problem and 100% students had no problem in writing complex sentences by using restrictive adjective clause as replacement of subject and 31% students had problem and 69% students had no problem in writing complex sentences by using restrictive adjective clause as replacement of object. Finally, based on the findings, it was concluded that many students at Bung Hatta University had problems in writing complex sentences. Consequently, the lecturers are suggested to minimize the students’ problems by giving good ways; such as giving explanation, motivation and example in writing complex sentences. Then they are suggested to find out some good ways to minimize their problems by getting more explanation, motivation and example. For the researchers, it is suggested to study about factors that cause students’ problems in writing complex sentence by using non restrictive and restrictive adjective clause.
