Abstract

This study aimed to describe the motivation to learn math for students whose learning strategy was Learning Cycle 5E and to examine the learning outcome of those students. This type of research is experimental. The population was class VIII SMP Kartika I-7 Padang. The sample in this study were selected by random sampling, therefore two classes. Experimental class implementing learning strategies cycle (Cycle Learni 5E), and control using ordinary learning. The instrument used in this study at was questionnaire, and at test results. Motivation to study experimental class students calculated the percentage of acquisition at the beginning and end of the study, using the N-Gain test. The results showed that (1) Students' motivation experimental class increased from 56,45% to 78,62% with an index gain of 0,51; (2) Improved student learning outcomes experimental class is higher than the increase in student learning outcomes that control class in the experimental class with the index gain 0,32 and the control class with the index gain 0,05.
