AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT AT SMAN 3 LUBUK BASUNG KABUPATEN AGAM

Abstrak

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of second year students at SMAN 3 Lubuk Basung in writing narrative text. The design of this research was descriptive. The total members of population were 119. The researcher used stratified random sampling technique in selecting the sample. Data of the research were students’ scores to write narrative text. The data were collected by using writing test as instrument. From the result of data analysis, writing narrative text was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 70,45%. In specific, their ability in writing orientation was moderate  and it is indicated by the fact that 77,28%, their ability in writing complication was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 79,55%, their ability in writing resolution was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 75 %, their ability in using language features was moderate  and it is indicated by the fact that 81,82%, their ability in using vocabulary was moderate  and it is indicated by the fact that 75%, their ability in using mechanics was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 68,18%. Due to the finding of this study, the English teachers are suggested to consider their strategy in teaching and giving more exercises to improve students’ ability to write narrative text. For students, they are suggested to study more about generic structure of narrative text, the words and mechanics that should be used, and to do more exercises to write narrative text.
