AN ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL ERRORS ON ABSTRACT OF THESIS WRITTEN BY LAW STUDENTS GRADUATED IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016 AT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstrak

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the grammatical errors on abstract of thesis written by law students graduated in academic year 2015/2016 at Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the sample. It means the sample was 15 abstracts written by the students graduated in academic year 2015/2016 onApril and August 2015. The result of this study showed that the students made errors in omission (22%), misformation(23.3%) and misordering (6.7%). In specific, there were errors in omission of plurality 3.5 (23.3%), errors in omission of s/es as the third singular person 3.5 (23.3%), errors in omission of be 5 (33.5%), errors in omission of article 1 (6.7%), errors in omission of correlative conjunction 3.5 (23.3%), errors in misformation of auxiliary verbs1 (6.6%), errors in misformation of be9 (60%), misformation of verb 0.5 (3.3%),errors in misordering of adjective2 (13.3). The researcher found that most errors made by the students were misformation. Based on the result of the research, the English lecturers at law faculty are suggested to improve students’ ability to write abstract in English, and how to write a good abstract in English, to minimize students’ error in omission, misformation and misordering. The law students are expected to study harder and learn more about writing abstract of thesis, especially to improve their ability on grammar and minimize errors on misformation of be.
