Using a correlational design, the population consisted of 30 students selected through total sampling. The instruments were a questionnaire on listening habits and a vocabulary test. Data analysis revealed that the correlation coefficient (rcalculated = 0.340) was lower than rtable (0.361) at the 0.05 significance level, indicating no significant relationship between the two variables. Therefore, the null hypothesis was accepted, suggesting that listening to English songs does not significantly contribute to vocabulary mastery. This might be due to the repetitive, informal, or context-specific nature of song lyrics, as well as the tendency of students to listen for entertaining.
2025-09-21T00:00:00+00:00Hak Cipta (c) 2025 https://ejurnal.bunghatta.ac.id/index.php/JFKIP/article/view/28770AN ANALYSIS OF THE ELEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN COMPREHENDING FAIRY TALES AT SMK 1 MUHAMMADIYAH PADANG2025-09-21T14:35:24+00:00Gelegar .Gelegar@gmail.comFitrina Harmainifitrina_harmaini@bunghatta.ac.id
ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to describe the ability of the eleventh-grade students in comprehending fairy tales at SMK 1 Muhammadiyah Padang in the academic year 2024/2025. The findings revealed that the students’ overall comprehension ability was low; 92.86% of students had low ability and only 7.14% had high ability. In character traits, 78.57% had high ability; in identifying setting, 50% had high ability; while in moral messages, 100% of students had low ability. It can be concluded that students’ comprehension of fairy tales was generally low, especially in identifying moral messages. Mastery of the simple present tense is essential because it is the basic tense commonly used in descriptive writing. However, preliminary observations showed that many students still struggled with its application. The objective of this research was to identify the types and frequency of errors made by students when applying the simple present tense in writing descriptive texts. The research employed a quantitative method with a random sample of 14 students from class X.2. Data were collected through a writing test, and errors were classified based on surface strategy taxonomy into omission, addition, misordering, and misformation. The findings revealed a total of 52 errors consisting of omission (12 cases or 23.07%), addition (10 cases or 19.23%), misordering (5 cases or 9.63%), and misformation (25 cases or 48.07%). Misformation errors were found to be the most dominant, indicating that students had difficulties in using correct verb forms according to the subject. These results suggest the need for more explicit grammar instruction, especially regarding verb agreement and the use of auxiliary verbs, to help students reduce grammatical errors and improve their writing accuracy.

Keywords: Error analysis, simple present tense, descriptive text, student writing
2025-09-22T00:00:00+00:00Hak Cipta (c) 2025 https://ejurnal.bunghatta.ac.id/index.php/JFKIP/article/view/28884AN ANALYSIS OF THE ELEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE NARRATIVE TEXT AT SMAN 7 PADANG 2025-09-23T15:23:06+00:00Edrea Jihan Fadillahedreajihanfadillah2019@gmail.comLisa Tavriyantilisa.tavriyanti@bunghatta.ac.id
ABSTRACT

This research aimed to describe the eleventh grade students’ ability in writing narrative text at SMAN 7 Padang.
