Abstract

Coconut shell is one of the raw materials that has the potential to be used as an active charcoal catalyst. This research was aimed to study the effect of variations in H2SO4 concentration and contact time of charcoal at the stage of activation of glucose levels produced at the hydrolysis stage. The activation process was carried out at a temperature of 45˚C with varization of concentrations (6.8 and 10 N) and variations in activation times (8.12 and 16 hours). The hydrolysis process is carried out at 121˚C for 1 hour. The results showed that concentration and activation time greatly influenced the water content and ash content and glucose levels produced. The highest glucose level (26.79 mg/ml) was obtained with 8 N H2SO4 concentration with activation time of 12 hours and obtained water content and ash content of 2% and 2.35%.
