Abstract

Coconut shell is an abundant agricultural waste in Indonesia but is not utilized as good as other waste, such as biomass feedstock. This material has a high carbon content. To increase  the economic value of coconut shell, it can be used as  raw material of catalyst to growing fast  the esterification/transesterification reaction of free fatty acids or  triglycerides. The catalyst preparation was done by combustion and without combustion then continue with immersion process by using H2SO4 and KOH. Futhermore, this mixture was calcined at 670 oC for 1 hour. The performance of catalyst was tested by esterification proces with cooking oil waste . The optimum performance was obtained by KOH without combustion immersion, whereas the condition optimum was 1,3 % catalyst (W/V), 1: 1.5(V /V) oil : methanol ratio , 1 hour reaction time. The result showed 84.26% conversion and 97% yield.
