Abstract

Brick is a man-made building material that has been used for thousands of years. Initially bricks were made from lumps of earth or mud in the form of blocks which were then compacted and dried. The purpose of this study is to prove whether the addition of plastic waste in the manufacture of bricks can produce solid bricks so as to reduce plastic waste. In this study, two types of plastic were used, namely PET or PETE (Polyethylene Ethylene Terephalate) and LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) plastics. This research was conducted with different percentages of plastic weight, namely 1%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 9% of the actual brick weight. The manufacture of plastic bricks is made in two methods, the first method is where the plastic is chopped first and then heated until it melts after that it is mixed with clay and then printed, the purpose of plastic is to glue the bricks to make them moresturdy. The second method is that the plastic is chopped first and then mixed with clay after that it is printed and dried for 7 days and burned for 3 days and 3 nights. These two methods have far different results, the first method did not work and the second method worked but the plastic used was not as expected, because the purpose of the plastic is to glue the bricks, while in the second method the plastic that has been burned creates empty space so that the resulting brick is brittle and easily decomposed. In the process of testing the compressive strength of the researchers using a load of 1 kg and dropped with a height of 50 cm. In the results of this trial, all the bricks tested were split in half and some could not be tested because the bricks had been destroyed in the combustion process
