Abstract

Solar energy is energy that can never be exhausted if used. At this time the use of technology to produce clean water and saline solution in Indonesian is still very rare to find. Especially for the manufacture of salt, as salt farmers in Indonesia are still using the traditional way to produce a salt that is by making the ponds on the coast by utilizing sunlight as a natural heating evaporating sea water to get salt. From this research are briefly described on the working principle of this distillation apparatus. Where sea water introduced into the basin (catchment) as high as 2 cm cross-sectional area of 80 cm x 50 cm with a volume of 8000 ml glass cover and tilt 20 °, the sun heats the absorber plate and the sea, so the sea water evaporates and condenses naturally. The research was conducted in Oktober 2013 as well as Performance Engineering Laboratory Department of Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Industrial Technology University of Bung Hatta, Padang. From research conducted obtained average yield was 569.16 ml of condensate in one day with an average intensity of 543.9 W / m² in one day, and for 2510 ml saline solution obtained with the level of  for six days of research .
