SUMMARY

            The process of learning mathematics that took place so far in SMP Negeri 3 Tanjung Raya Agam District is still focused on the teacher. Lack of student roles in the learning process, resulting in students receiving only from teacher explanations. As a result students are less creative in finding concepts. Thus, the concept of student understanding has not been maximized. Understanding the concept that has not been maximized is one of the causes of low student learning outcomes. The purpose of this study is to know the understanding of students' concepts in learning mathematics students using the method of discovery tebimbing better than the results of learning mathematics students using ordinary learning in class VIII SMP Negeri 3 Tanjung Raya Agam District. The hypothesis proposed is the understanding of students' concepts by applying guided discovery methods better than understanding the concept of students by using ordinary learning. The type of research used is experiment.
            The population in the study were the students of class VIII SMP Negeri 3 Negeri Tanjung Raya Agam District academic year 2016/2017 consisting of two classes. Samples were taken by both classes through the average equation and selected class VIII A as the experimental class and class VIII B as the control class. The data in this study were obtained by giving the final test in the two sample classes, the test consists of 7 items of description. To test the hypothesis used t-test at the level of α = 0.05. From the calculation results obtained thitung = 5.8 while t (0.95, 54) = 1.673. Because thitung> t (0.95, 54) then the research hypothesis is accepted.
            Thus it can be concluded that the students' concept of understanding by applying the guided discovery method is better than understanding the concept of students by using ordinary learning in grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 3 Negeri Tanjung Raya Agam District.
