    This research is motivated low ability students' understanding of mathematical concepts. This study aims to look at the development of students' understanding of mathematical concepts in class VIII SMP 3 Lembang Jaya and determine whether the ability of understanding mathematical concepts that students taught with concept mapping (concept map) is better than the ability of understanding the concepts taught with conventional teaching. This type of research is experimental, in the study population were students of SMP 3 Lembang Jaya VIII in the school year 2012/2013. The research instrument consists of quizzes and tests understanding of the concept. Analysis of the development of students' understanding of mathematical concepts as seen from the average value of quizzes in every class meeting on experiments. Form of test used is the reliability of the test essay R11 = 0.92. Hypotheses regarding the analysis of data on students' understanding of mathematical concepts as second-class samples obtained an average student understanding of mathematical concepts in the experimental class = 69.5 and an average understanding of mathematical concepts in class control = 57.07 with P-value = 0.032 is smaller of α = 0.05. Thus, it can be concluded that the students' understanding of mathematical concepts are taught with Concept Mapping (Concept Map) better understanding of the concept of students taught with conventional teaching eighth grade students SMPN3 Lembang Jaya at the level of 95%.
