Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to determine the types of ectoparasites in lekang turtle hatchling (Lepidochelys olivacea) in three (3) different turtle breeding sites in West Sumatra. This research  starts from April to June 2018. The determination of the location of the study  was chosen by means of a porpusive sampling at three (3) locations including: UPTD Turtle Breeding Center, PSPDKP, Pariaman City, Community-based Turtle Conservation, Jambak Turtle Camp, Padang City, and Conservation community-based turtle, Amping Parak Turtle Camp, Pesisir Selatan District. Sample selection is done by porpusive sampling, where the number of turtle turtle hatchlings that became the object of the study were as many  as three (3) locations located between 10 - 15 days of life. Observation of the type of ectoparasite carried out on the outer part of the hatchling body by scraping, then placed on a glass object and observed under a microscope. Data analysis with descriptive motede by describing intensity analysis (ind / tail) and prevalence analysis (%).Observations of ectoparasites found from Chilodonella sp species and Tetrahymena sp. There is also the level of intensity of the ectoparasite attack sample from the City of Pariaman is as big as 0.92 ind / tail, Padang City is as big as 5 ind / tail, and Pesisir Selatan as big as 4.07 ind / tail. The results of the prevalence analysis were faund in Pariaman City as big as 26%, Padang City as big as 5.31%, and the Pesisir Selatan District is as big as 15%. Of the three (3) research locations, it was found that the largest level of ectoparasite attack  on the lekang turtles was the Padang City however, the highest incidence of ectoparasite infections is found in the City of Pariaman.

Keywords : Turtle hatchlings (Lepidochelys olivacea), identification of ectoparasites, attack rates and prevalence
