Abstract

In an effort to overcome the Aeromonas hydrophila attacks on African catfish (Clarias
gariepinus) by using antibiotics, tend to be expensive and less safe. The use of natural
medicine (herbal) is expected to address the issue of fish diseases with cheap and safe.
Infected fish with Aeromonas hydrophila via intramuscular injection at a concentration of 10

cfu/ml, 0.1 ml/fish on the first day and the observed clinical symptoms for 7 days. This study
was conducted to determine the effectiveness of betel leaf extract with different doses of feed
through the healing process of infection were observed for 15 days. The treatment used in this
study is that A (without betel leaf extract or control), B (20 ml of betel leaf extract /100 g
feed), C (30 ml of betel leaf extract /100 g feed), D (40 ml of betel leaf extract /100 g feed).
Test fish were observed for 22 days which survival rate, clinical symptoms and process of
recovery. The results of study showed that feeding pellets with betel leaf extract (Piper betle
L.) proved to be effective to prevent attacks Aeromonas hydrophila. Treatment D (40 ml of
betel leaf extract /100 g feed) is the most effective treatment to improve survival and cure
African catfish infected with Aeromonas hydrophila.
