AN ANALYSIS OF APOLOGIZING EXPRESSION IN CONFESSION OF A SHOPAHOLIC MOVIE

Abstract

This research aims at describing the apologizing expression in Confession of a
shopaholic movie by using pragmatic approach. Here, the writer analyzed the expression and strategy of apologizing in Confession of a shopaholic movie. This study uses qualitative method. Some theories used were based on Searle (1976), Leech (1983), Holmes (1990), Goffman (1971), Olshtain and Cohen (1983). The writer represents the data analysis in descriptive paragraph. The findings of the research are some expressions and the strategy of apology. There are many expressions of apology in different context. There are five types of apology strategy, and the writer only found two strategies, such as: An expression of apology (an expression of regret, an offer of apology, a request for forgiveness), and an explanation or account the situation. There are four types of context, but two types are more dominant to influence the emotional expression of apology in this movie, they are: physical context and linguistic context.
