THE STUDY OF PHATIC COMMUNICATION AS FOUND IN TV SERIES HANNAH MONTANA BY MICHAEL PORYES

Abstract

The research discussed about The Study of Phatic Communication as Found in TV Series Hannah Montana by Michael Poryes. The research focused on two discussions, there are; forms of phatic communication and functions of phatic communication. The purposes of the research are; to find out the form of phatic utterances and to analyze the functions of phatic communication as found in TV Series Hannah Montana. Furthermore, to achieve those purposes of the research the researcher used twelve functions of phatic communication based on the theory frame of Jumanto (2014). The techniques to conduct this research which are applied by the researcher are; watching the TV series, reading the script, and classifying the data. The result is that the speakers have uttered forms of phatic communication which are consisted of greetings and the use of names. The forms of greeting for instance are, “Hey”and “Morning”. The forms of the use of names for instance are; “Miley” and “Hannah”. Wheareas, the functions that uttered by the speakers in the TV Series are; “Starting a conversation”, “Breaking the silence”, “ Expressing empathy”, “Expressing friendship”, and “Creating comfort”. From those functions the speakers often used “Starting a conversation”. Meanwhile, the form that the speaker often used is greeting.
