SACRIFICE OF A CHILD TO THE PARENT IN THE SHORT STORY TEN MADE TODOKE BY YOSHIDA GENJIRO
Abstract
The author chose the short story Ten Made Todoke as the object of research becausein this story contains a moral message experienced by Yaichi. Yaichi has a sense of affection
towards his parents. His affection for his father caused him to sacrifice until his father came
back home. The authors used plot and setting of fiction elements. Furthermore, sacrifice as a
moral message of the short story is divided into two according to Raymond, namely material
sacrifice and immaterial sacrifice. The method used in this research is descriptive method.
Plot stages in the short story, the first stage, middle stage, and the final stage. The setting is
also divided into three sections: place, time background, and social. The results concluded
that Yaichi's sacrifice to his father was a material and immaterial sacrifice. The sacrifice of
material is a sacrifice of property and energy by destroying then burning down his home to
light a fire guide for his father back to home. While the immaterial sacrifice,feelings and
mind relates to the social setting as well as the on and the culture of Japanese society. On
received by a child followed by giri from child to parent.
