ANXIETY AND DEFENSE MECANISM OF KOYAMA NOBUO IN NOVEL HOUKAGO NI SHISA WA MODORU BY AKIYOSHI RIKAKO

Abstract

The author chose Houkago ni Shisa wa Modoru novel as the object of research because in this novel contains psychological problems experienced by Koyama Nobuo. Koyama Nobuo has anxiety as he exchanges bodies with Takahashi Shinji and to overcome the anxiety he uses defense mechanisms to deal with it. This research used the psychoanalytical theory by Sigmud Freud. In psychoanalytic theory there are three kinds of anxiety that is realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety. These anxieties can be overcome by a defense mechanism. The defense mechanisms are repression, sublimation, projection, diversion, rationalization, formation reactions, regression (retrogressive behavior and primivation), aggression and apathy, fantasy, and stereotype. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The study reveals that three anxieties exist within Koyama Nobuo. Of the nine defense mechanisms, it is known Koyama Nobuo has six, namely repression, sublimation, diversion, regression formation reactions and aggression. Formation repression and reactions are related to realistic anxiety and moral anxiety. Sublimation is related to moral anxiety. Redirects are related to realistic anxiety. Regression is related to neurotic anxiety. Aggression is related to realistic anxiety. The results of the analysis show that Koyama Nobuo has more realistic anxiety, so to overcome it is also used more defense mechanisms of repression and reaction formation.
