THE SPEECH ACT OF COMMISSIVE AS USED ON THE SADIQ KHAN’S SPEECHE

Abstract

"> The study aims at describing the speech act of commissive used by Sadiq Khan in some campaigns. The method used in this study is qualitative method. The source of data
are the campaign speeches taken from the relevant websites. All of the data that consist
of utterances that refers to the commissive speech act were analyzed by using pragmatic
approach and some related theories stated by Searle (1976), Brown and Levinson (1987). The writer focuses on the types of commissive speech act delivered by Sadiq Khan in his speeches. After analyzing the data, the result shows that there are six types of commissive speech act in Sadiq Khan’s speeches, namely promising, planning, offering, opposing, refusal and pledging. And, the communication strategies used by Sadiq Khan in delivery the speech act of commissive in terms of direct strategy and indirect strategy.
