Abstract

Verbal phrase is a group of verbs that express an actions. It is obvious that if these two
different verbal phrases are compared, the structure will be different. Therefore, the
understanding of rules in knowing the similaritiy and difference of these two kinds of verbal
phrases is needed before finding out the comparison. This research focuses on observing and
comparing the similarity and difference of verbal phrase between the two languages.
Comparative linguistics is linguistics studies which aim to describe the similarity and
difference between two different languages.The description of the similarity and difference
will be used for teaching of the two languages as a second language or a foreign language
(Sutedi, 2003).
The method used within this research is comparative method. The data for the research
was obtained from a Japanese novel and an Indonesian novel. In conducting the research, the
researcher used a note-taking method for data collection technique. The technique involves
reading sentences that contain Japanese and Indonesian verbal phrases and recording the data
on a data card. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by using an appeal link technique.
The result finds that the similarity of the two languages’ verbal phrases is that the
derivative verbs and formed by affixes. Meanwhile, the difference is the Japanese verbal
phrases structure are combined by grammatical categories, such as voice, tense, aspect, and
modality, verbal are changed a form, formed by suffixes and auxiliary verb, verbal phrases in
front of noun phrases and the position of the verbal phrase as a predicate located after the
object. Meanwhile, Indonesian verbal phrases structure are combined by adverb, verbal are
formed by prefixes, suffixes, con-fixes, and basic verbs without the contribution of affixes,
verbal phrases adverb bound can be located at the front and at the end, and the position of
verbal phrases as predicates are put after the subject.
