An Achievement of Self-actualization of Mire and Shiyo Character in the Novel Ankoku Joshi: Humanistic Psychology

Abstract

The author chooses Ankoku Joshi (Girl in the Dark) novel by Akiyoshi Rikako
as the object of research because this novel has two characters who are assumpt that
has achieved as self-actualization at the end of the story despite having different life
backgrounds. The first character is Mire who came from a poor family that made her
have to work hard. Thesecond character is Shiyo who came from a rich family where
livedin abroad. The author is interested in analyzing the multilevel needs of Mire
figures and Shiyo figures from the lowest physiological needs to the highest
self-actualization.
The theory used in this study is twofold. The first is fiction characterization
method used to find the character of the author and the second is indirect method
(showing) who divided into dialog and action. The elements of the dialog that the
author used consist of what the speaker says, the speaker identity, the mental quality
of the characters and the voice tone. Then, the element of action that the author used
is the underlying motivation. The second is humanistic psychological theory
Abraham Maslow which consist of constisting of physiological needs, safety needs,
belongingness and love needs,esteem needsand self-actualization needs, that is used
to multilevel needs analysis (Minderop, 2011:50-80).
This research uses qualitative research. The technique of data collection
isliterature technique research. The data sources used in the study namely primary
and secondary data sources.The technique of data analysis is carried out with several
steps, (1) reading and understanding the novel Ankoku Joshi (2) conducting library
studies related to research problems (3) grouping data on character traits and
multilevel needs on Mire and Shiyo character (4) analyzing the two characters used
the fiction analysis characterization method (5) analyzed multilevel needs ranging
from the lowest needs to the highest needs, namely self-actualization using
humanistic psychology Abraham Maslow (6) concluding the results of the study.
The result of the study finds that the characters of Mire and Shiyo had reached
each level from the lowest needs to the needs of self-aclualization supported by
positive and negative characeter they had. The character of each person supports each
process of fullilling the need to achieve self-actualization.
