An Analysis Speech Act of Commissivein the Novel “The Fault” InOur Startsby John Green

Abstract

The speech acts occur in different walks of life with various form of language style.
Language is one of tools of communication. Language is very important in our life. In
communication, language has an important role because it is used to deliver information, ideas,
feelings, desires of what the speaker wants in delivering language to the listener. When people
try to communicate to others, they use utterances to express what they have in their mind toward
the listener. Utterances organized by the speaker and they can be done through explicit and an
implicit utterance. Therefore, this study aims to discuss about the utterances in speech act of
Commissive in the Novel The Fault In Our Starts
In the speech act theory many experts who concern at this branch of science give
definition about speech act.Yule (1996:111) viewed that speech acts are action happening in the
world, that is, they bring about a change in the existing state of fairs. In addition, Parker
(1986:14) defined speech act as every utterance of speech act constitutes some sort of fact.The
study of speech act is very importanct for us. It makes us comprehend the messages of every
utterance.
The type of this research was qualitative research. The object in this research was “the novel of
The Fault in Our Stars”. The technique of data collection to find the speech act iscommissive.
Consist of five ways such as a) observing the conversation in the novel, b)Utterances reduction,
c) gathering the utterances which for this research, d) identifying word by word the chosen
utterances for this research, e) classifying the utterances according to type speech act.
Afterclassifying the utterances the writer take the utterances easily to be analyzed.
The speech act ofcommissivewere found in TheFault in Our Starsnovel and has been
discussed in this research areonly five types dominated, they are threat, promise, warning,
offering, and refuse. It can be concluded that there are many form of speech act can be analyzed
such as speech act directive, declarative, representative, expressive and commissive.
