An Analysis of Translation Shift in the Subtitle Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire Movie

Abstract

Translation is proces of transfering the meaning and information from the source
languange (SL) into the target language (TL). Translation has several procedures and one of
the translation shift. Translation shift some changes occurring in a translation process.
Translation shifts occur both at the lower level of language, the lexico grammar, and at the
higher thematic level of text. This study aims to see accurrance of shift , type and posibble
reasons the occur in the subtitle Harry potter and Goblet of Fire Movie.
This research, the writer focuses more on analyzing the movie. Movies are popular in
Indonesia. Since movies use English language, Indonesian people who watch those movies
require the movie subtitle in their language. It means language is an important part for
human in terms of constructing the interaction to one person into another so that there will
be no misunderstanding. That is why movie subtitle is needed in order to translate English
into Indonesian to obtain the better understanding for the movie. The writer used translation
shift for reduce misunderstanding.
Catford (1965) shift can be divided into 2 types they are: level shift and Catagory
shift. Catagory shift divided 4 tpes they are: Structure shift, Class shift, Unit shift and Intra
system shift. Bell (1991) the role of translator of diffrent from the normal communicator, the
translator is billingual mediating agent between monolingual communication participants in
two diffrent language communities.
Matsumoto (2003) that translation is not only changing writing frome one language
to another language, words by words or sentences by sentences, but also interpretation of
culture diffrences. In the process of translating subtitles, translators can make shifts to
minimize problems with grammar between the source language and the target language. the
translator must see the shifting counterpart that occurs in the target language that has certain
cultures and structures. Larson (1984: 2) states that a translator must analyze the text
comprehensively in order to determine its meaning, and then reconstruct the same
meaning by using the grammatical structure that is appropriate in the target language
and its cultural context.”
The method used in analyzing the research is qualitative method that refers scientific
method of observation to gather non-numerical data. It refers to the meaning, concepts
definitions characteristic metaphor, symbols, and description things. The data were taken
fron the subtitle Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire Movie using the translation shift.
From the the analysis, the writer to find out type ang posibble reasons in the subtitle
Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire Movie. The writer found in this movie have many sentences
using translation shift. The writer find type and the writer clearly sees the shift shape in the
movie subtitles. The writer found the posibble reasons in the subtitle for make audiance more
understanding about translation shift for source language (SL) to target language (TL). The
writer also explains the influence of differences in cuture and structure that effect shift
accoured.
