Abstract

Washi paper is traditional handmade Japanese paper made using plant material, kozo,
gampi and mitsumata plant material. Washi is generally harder than ordinary paper made from
wood pulp, and is used in many traditional arts and everyday items. This study aims to describe
the history and development of washi in Japan and the function of the use of washi paper in
Japanese culture.
The author does not find research on the history of the development and function of
washi in Japan today. However, the authors found two studies examining Japanese washi,
namely the use of washi as a means of restoration of ancient manuscripts and the use of
masculine and feminine colors in Japanese children's birthday gifts. The theory that I use is the
theory of cultural, cultural diffusion and cultural acculturation.
This type of research is descriptive, which describes the history of the development and
function of washi paper in Japan today. Data collection techniques carried out by means of
library research (library research). Descriptive data analysis techniques are performed by: (a)
describing, (b) analyzing, and (c) clarifying the data obtained.
Based on the results of data analysis and discussion, it was found the history of the
development and function of washi paper in Japan, from the initial introduction to the
introduction of traditional paper making from China to Japan. The development of materials and
techniques for making washi paper. Also found washi paper functions from the Asuka era to the
Meiji era. The functions of the washi paper include washi as shouji, washi as calligraphy, washi
as chocin (lantern), washi for Ukiyo-e, washi as fashion.
