The Meaning of Sadness of Lemon and Flamingo Lyrics by Kenshi Yonezu: Imagine

Abstract

The author chose the lyrics of the song Lemon and Flamingo by Yonezu Kenshi
as the object of research because in these two singles there are words that mean
sadness. Based on the title, Lemon is included in the flora category which symbolizes
sadness and loss in Japanese culture. While the Flamingo including the type of fauna.
In the view of the general public, flamingos are migratory birds that leave sadness
and loss. This study aims to reveal the meaning of sadness through the analysis of
images.
The author did not find research with the same object on both of the song's lyrics.
MV Lemon and Flamingo producer, Yamada Tomakazu, said that expression can
only be done through music. The author concludes the expression of sadness
represented in Lemon and Flamingo. The theory used in this research is the
assessment. Judgement can be limited by understanding words or wording that can
express sensory experiences and feelings. The line or verse of the poem seems to
sound contain and echoes listening (auditive images), the object that visible and
moving (visual images), or perceived,touch, and taste (tactile images) (Waluyo, 1987).
This research is included in qualitative research with descriptive research
methods. The data collection technique used is the library reseach technique (library
technique). The data analysis technique was carried out with several steps, namely (1)
downloading and translating song lyrics; (2) grouping data based on images, (3)
analyzing the meaning of sadness based on images; (4) summarizing the results of the
study.
The results of the study revealed the meaning of the sadness of the song lyrics
Lemon has one auditive image data, four visual images, and seven tactile images. The
meaning of sadness in the form of a feeling is insecurity in the heart because of the
lover who is found in many tactile images (touch of feeling) Flamingo song lyrics
have one auditive image data, four visual images, and three tactile images. The
meaning of sadness is a touch of insecurity in the heart that cannot have loved ones,
which is there are many in visual images (something that appears and moves). The
title Lemon and Flamingo after the analysis of the image is meaningful sadness in the
form of heart distress.
