The role of Undoukai in shaping the character of children
Abstract
"> Children's character education is very important at school, especially at the elementary school level to develop the values of honesty, discipline, hard work and respect to others. Character education is very effective through physical education in schools. Undoukai is a routine sporting event held in all schools in Japan, from kindergarten to college. This event was held with a very neat preparation, and well coordinated. Children in elementary school who are on average 6-12 years old really need encouragement for character building In doing the Research, the writer applies character formation theory according to Koesoema A (2007: 80) which states that a person's characteristics come from the formations received from the environment, family in childhood and one's innate at birth. In this case the writer wants to find the role of undoukai in shaping the character of children at elementary school age. In this Research, The type of research is descriptive qualitative. The object of this research is Japanese elementary school’s children. The technique of collecting data is done by First, grouping the data according to research related to the role of undoukai in shaping the character of children. Second, analyzing the data that has been grouped and then explained descriptively. And the last, make conclusions The results of the Research is from data analysis and discussion found that the character of children formed from the role of undoukai is to form sportsmanship, a sense of responsibility, teamwork, optimism. Sportsmanship is formed from the attitude of the knight child who accepts defeat sincerely, wants to respect and recognizes the superiority and victory of the opponent. A sense of responsibility is formed from the obligations of children who must assume the responsibility and trust of the team. Teamwork is formed from games in undoukai that require a lot of cooperation and mutual trust in the team. Like the Ootama Korogashi (rolling ball) teamwork is formed from the rules of the game to roll a big ball from the start line to finish with a good strategy and teamwork to handle and control the ball so it does not fall. An attitude of optimism can be formed from the support or encouragement of friends, teachers, parents and people around to arouse the child's confidence.Keywords: undoukai, character, children, role
