The Influence of Characterization toward Haruki’s Conflict in Kimi no Suizoo o Tabetai by Sumino Yoru

Abstract

h: 0px; "> The porpose of this study is to reveal the influence of characterization toward Haruki’s conflict in Kimi no Suizoo o Tabetai by Sumino Yoru. Haruki is a loner and timid character who always withdraws from social environment. These characterizations of Haruki cause conflicts both internal and eksternal. This study uses structural theory such as characterization, setting, plot, and conflict (Nurgiyantoro, 1998) to help get a description of the influence of characterization toward Haruki’s conflict. Conflicts is divided into two, that is internal conflict and external conflict (Stanton in Nurgiyantoro, 1998: 124). This research is a qualitative research with descriptive method. The object of this study is Kimi no Suizoo o Tabetai a novel by Sumino Yoru. Data collection carried out in a way (1) repeated readings, (2) do a librarry research related to this study, (3) classify data of characterizations and setting, (4) analyze data of characterization and setting, (5) classify data of plot and conflict, (6) analyze plot, (7) analyze conflict and the influence of characterization toward Haruki’s conflict both internal and external based on theory used, and (8) make a conclusion. Based on the result of this study, Haruki’s conflicts are: (1) the internal conflicts are confused and dilemma caused by contention of different choises, annoyed and regret are caused by hopes. Meanwhile his annoyance, guilty feeling, anger, regret, uneasiness, anxiety, fear, and sadness are caused by other problems. The characterizations that influence the internal conflict is loner and timid character. (2) The external conflicts in the form of dispute between characters are influenced by loner and timid characterization of Haruki and others. The dispute between Haruki and Sakura is caused by mischievous characterization of Sakura. The dispute between Haruki and Takahiro is caused by grumpy characterization of Takahiro. The dispute between Haruki and Kyoko is caused by protective characterization of Kyoko. The external conflict that happened between Sakura and Takahiro ends in a violence. As a conclusion, all of Haruki’s conflicts are influenced by his loner and timid characterization.
