Analysis of the Meaning of Connotation in the Novel Sirkus Pohon by Andrea Hirata
Abstract
The meaning of connotation is another meaning that is "added" to the denotativemeaning related to the sensed value of the person or group of people who use the word. This
study aims to describe the form of connotation meaning in the novel Sirkus Pohon by Andrea
Hirata.
The meaning of the connotation has been discussed by some researchers, namely
Sya'dah in 2012 and Farid in 2017. The meaning of the connotation is referred to as an
additional meaning. The used of connotation meaning might need to be corrected only as an
additional attribute to give a sense of value, both positive and negative, or if it is not worth a
value can be called a neutral connotation (Chaer, 2009: 67). Various connotations have two
properties, namely individual and collective. The individual connotation is a sensible value
that only self-assertion and is only for individuals, whereas collective connotation is a
sensible value that applies to group members or the community. Collective connotation or
group sense value is divided into three groups, namely good connotation, bad connotation,
and neutral or ordinary connotation (Tarigan, 2009: 52).
The method used in this research is the descriptive method, while the object of this
research is the Circus Tree novel published in September 2017 and the thickness of the novel
is 410 pages. The data collection methods and techniques used are the listening method and
the note-taking technique. Data collection techniques are done by (a) reading the novel Circus
Tree, (b) marking sentences that are words meaningful connotations, and (c) recording
sentences that have connotations. Data analysis methods and techniques used are the methods
used by the techniques of wear and expansion techniques. The data analysis technique is done
by (a) identifying the data that has been found, (b) describing the data, (c) analyzing the data,
and (d) drawing conclusions.
Based on the results of the analysis conducted, found the meaning of connotation in
the novel Sirkus Pohon there are two kinds, namely (a) good connotation and (b) bad
connotation. In a good connotation, the connotation found is of two kinds, namely a high
connotation and a friendly connotation, whereas in a bad connotation, there are three kinds of
