Abstract

Scooby-Doo is an American television animated series produced for
television shows Saturday morning (airtime for children television shows in
the US). This animated film has been produced in several different versions
from 1969 to the present. These five figures Scooby-Doo is a talking dog
and four teenagers: Fred "Freddie" Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley,
and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers (officially known together as "Mystery, Inc."
though not originally named as such) travel around the world in a van called
"Mystery Machine", and solve various mysteries related to ghosts and
supernatural powers. At the end of each episode, the magical power turns
out to have a plausible explanation, usually of criminal plans that use
costumes and special mechanical effects with the aim of scaring or
distracting attention. Because Indonesians like Scooby-Doo films, the role
of translator is very important to translate the original language (SL) of the
film into Indonesian (TL). Translation is necessary for people who do not
understand this language, therefore they can watch and understand the
meaning of the film being watched.
Translation is always associated with language and is also closely
related to the culture of two or more countries. As Ananda, Hasan, &
Thamrin (2018) said that language is an important part for human in terms
of constructing the interaction to one person into another. There are various
kinds of languages that can be used in one country to another. This is one of
the reasons why translation is extremely needed in order to make an
equivalence message which is written in the source language to the target
language. Newmark (1988) defines culture as the way of life and its
manifestations that has differences in terms of behavior, habits, customs
used in a particular language as its means of expressions. One of the
differences are reflected in the language and its translation and will be
discussed in this study. According to Nida and Taber (1974, p.12) in Hasan
(2008) translating means diverting messages contained in the source
language (SL) into the target language (TL) so that the people who read (or
hear) the messages in source language (SL) feels like the person reading the
translation in the target language (TL).
The research used descriptive qualitative method. qualitative
method is a set of method that aims to gather an in-depth understanding of
the phenomenon of the study. Qualitative research is usually inductive
Smaller rather than larger samples are used for qualitative research.
Qualitative research aim to answer questions how and why. The research
data is taken from the Scooby-Doo Return To Zombie Island. The film was
released in September 2019 directed by Cecilia Aranovich and Ethan
Spaulding. Distributed by Warner Bros. Observation method is a process in
observing the data by observing the Scooby-Doo movie. First, the writer
watched the movie with two subtitles; English as a source language and
Indonesian as the target language. The second the writer analyzed and
categorized the collected data based on each kinds of translation techniques
found in the movie. After that, the writer made conclusions about that. The
data of this research are the sentences in movie subtitle both English and
Indonesian. The writer used Indonesian subtitle from the site called
Subscene. The writer used Molina and Albir translation techniques (2002)
that have eighteen techniques. The first, the writer made a list from the data
that were taken. Then the data will be classified into several techniques
found in the target language subtitle text of the film by using a table.
In this research, the writer find out the translation techniques in the
Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island movie subtitle from English to
Indonesian subtitle and find the reason. The writer found out seven types of
translation techniques in the movie subtitle. The most translation techniques
used is borrowing (63), literal translation (50), amplification (21), calque
(16), transposition (14), reduction (11), and adaptation (2). The reason why
borrowing technique are the most translation techniques found by the writer
is the two different languages between target language and source language.
Those languages are English (SL) and Indonesian (TL). English and
Indonesian languages have a differentiation of spelling system and their
pronunciation. Spelling and pronunciation of both languages have a concept
which is based on the orientation which want to achieved in the translation.
Borrowing concept particularly in the target language is to show the
meaning of the source language expressed in the target language in order to
make its translation easily understood. Borrowing is implemented in the
target language because the foreign lexical items are available in Indonesian
dictionary. It has borrowed fully or partially and has close relationship of
adjusting. The adjustment can be done by absorptions, modifications,
spelling rules and pronunciation in the target language.
