Idiom in Laskar Pelangi Novel by Andrea Hirata

Abstract

Idiom is units of language. It can be words, phrase or sentence that the meaning can’t
be predicted from elements of lexical meaning or grammatical meaning. The purposes of this
research is to describe types and meaning of idiom in Laskar Pelangi novel by Andrea Hirata.
Yudiarto (2005) has been discussed about idiom by using Chaer’s (2009) and
Soedjito’s (1992). Chaer’s (2009:60) divided seven types of idiom, they are : (1) gramatical
and lexical meaning, (2) refencial and non refencial meaning, (3) denotative and conotative
meaning, (4) term and word meaning, (5) associative and conceptual meaning, (6) idiom and
maxim meaning, (7) and figurative meaning. In this research the writer only discussed about
idiom meaning. According to Soedjito there are seven types of idiom, they are (1) part of
bodies idiom, (2) five senses idiom, (3) colors idiom, (4) nature things idiom, (5) animals
idiom, (6) plants idiom, and (7) number idiom.
The method of this research is descriptive. The source of this research is Laskar Pelangi
novel by Andrea Hirata. The method of collecting data is reading method by using noting
technique. Technique of analyzing data is sharing method by using technique of fading.
Based on this research it can be concluded, there are seven types of idioms has found in
the Laskar Pelangi novel by Andrea Hirata. They are, (1) idioms with part of bodies word
using head and heart, (2) idioms with part of five senses word using lips, (3) idioms with
colors word using pale, (4) idioms with thature things word using moon, gold, and diamond,
(5), idioms with word of animals using horse, eel, spider and monkey, (6) idioms with
number word using half, one, and a thousand, (7) idioms with part of plants word using leaf
and fruit.
