Abstract

Translation is tranfer the original meaning from SL (Source language) to TL (target language). The translation aims to help people sharing information each other. Translation also has a purpose. Translation aims to convey the natural meaning of a message, taking into account cultural and regional differences between the SL and TL. The translators have to study about the target language before doing translation so that the message in SL can be transferred perfectly into TL. In other ways there is no missing in transferred the messages. Usually, people tend to found the translation process on novels, songs, movies, or even poems. According to Catford (1978: 73) says that what is meant is a move some
formal on the process move from SL into TL. Nida and Taber (1974; 105) said that in tranfer original meaning from SL into TL must be preserved at any cost. Because cases like poetry is must be high complex and variable. In this research method, the researcher analyzes the shifting technique in translation based on subtitle film data. Berg (2007) states that qualitative research interprets concept, definition, characteristic, and more. So, methods such qualitative are processes of understanding, events and relationships in social and cultural contexts. The researcher examine data sources, data collection techniques and techniques that represent data, The research data is taken from The Chronicles
of Narnia movie. There are some ways to collect the data, the first (a) researcher watching the movie for many times, (b) the researcher downloads the subtitle text of the movie both English and Indonesian, (c) read the subtitle text and observe the types of translation shifts found in the movie, and the last (d) record all data in accordance with the categories needed. After collect the data, the researcher analyzed data and classify data according to research question. (a) classified the data based on each types of translation and the influences based on theory, (b) make a table and input the data. After the researcher finished the analysis of all data in Chronicles of
Narnia movie and subtitle, the researcher found level shift and category shift (structure shift, class, unit, and intra-system). All shifts that researcher found is not in the same frequency, they their own number and also percentage. The researcher found 153 cases from 111 data of all shift occurred in Choronicles of
Narnia movie and subtitle. And, based on the researcher analysis, Unit shift is the highest frequency and percentage occurred in Chronicles of Narnia movie and subtitle, with the 54 cases out of all 153 cases. Next is structure shift with 37 cases. Then, intra-system shift with 28 cases. And Level shift with 26 cases The lowest frequency of shift that researcher found is class shift, with only 8 cases out of all 153 casesquotes are belong to some cultures such as Japanese, American, and Indonesian cultures and most of the quotes are universal. The translation shifts can cause the degree of meaning equivalence. Degree of meaning equivalence has two types, it is equivalent meaning (decreased meaning, increased meaning, and complete meaning) and non-equivalent meaning (no meaning and decreased meaning). In this research the researcher also found all of that types and sub types. Based on the analysis that researcher done, the highest frequency is complete meaning and percentage with 60 cases out of all 105 cases. The second place is decreased meaning with 17 cases. And the next one is different meaning with 16 cases. Increased meaning with 12 cases and the lowest frequency are no meaning with 5 cases of all 105 cases.
