Abstract

Shabondama is a Japanese short story by Toyoshima Yoshio that tell the story of the efforts of a father named Habonsu to his son. The purpose of this study is to analyze the efforts of father to children through structural approaches. The word effort mean attempt, mind, endeavor (to achieve a purpose, solve problems looking for a way out) (KBBI online). The structural approach is used for data analysis. Structural approach is a theory that gives full attention to literature as an autonomous structure with intrinsic coherence (Suwondo, 1994: 69). The characterization according to Altenbernd and Lewis, the setting according to Abrams, the plot according to Richard Summers, and the theme according to Stanton are used to analyze the efforts of father to children (Nurgiyantoro, 1995). This type of research is a qualitative study using descriptive methods with library research data collection techniques. The data collection technique used is library research. Data analysis techniques that the authors do are (1) reading and understanding Shabondama stories, (2) conducting literature reviews related to research, (3) marking and classifying data about characterizations, settings, plots, and themes (4) analyzing character, setting, plot, and theme (5) classifying father efforts data on children (6) analyzing father effort data (7) linking effort analysis with character, setting, plot, and theme (8) making research conclusion. The results showed there were seven attempts by father on children in
Shabondama, attempt (seven data); mind (two data); endeavor (three data). Character, place setting, and time setting are related to father efforts on children. Likewise with the plot, starting from the stage of generating conflict (generating
circumstances) to the stage of resolution (denouement). The conclusion of the study explains that the efforts of father in children are dominated in the form of attempt. Efforts in the form of attempt are inseparable from mind and endeavor. The seven efforts of the father to the child are related to the merciful nature, which the father has; major theme is the effort of a father to the child; and minor themes, the life of street magician.
