AN ANALYSIS OF SWEAR WORDS IN BAD BOYS MOVIE

Abstract

Swear words can be used to express our emotion or strong feeling. According to Jay and Janschewitz (2008) [1] the main function of swearing is to express emotions, especially anger and frustration. As an example, Andersson and Trudgill (in Lindahl, 2008) [2] said that the word fuck can be used to express pain, pleasure, hate, and love depending on the context it appears. This inspires me to do the analysis about the swear words used in the movie entitled Bad Boys because in general swear words only used to express the users bad emotions or feelings. In this research the writer focusses on the swear words used in terms of the types of swear words and the mostly types used. The types of swear words were analyzed by using theory of Andersson and Trudgill (as cited in Lindahl, 2008:4) [3] they categorized swear words into four different types: (1) expletive, (2) abusive, (3) humorous, and (4) auxiliary. The purposes of the research are to find the swear words used, types of the swear words used and to determine the mostly used types of swear words. There are a number of researches done about swear words. Some of them are Fägersten, Dalarna, Sweden (2007) [4], they studied about a sociolinguistic analysis of swear word offensiveness. Then, Lindahl (2008) [5], studied about taboo words and swear words in general, and x-words in newspapers.
