Abstract

The purpose of the research is to describe the conflicts experienced by the female
characters in the collection of short stories Buah Tangan dari Jerman by Mori Oogai, Erisu
(Maihime), Marie (Utakata no Ki), and Ida (Fumizukai). There are four reasons why the
writer chooses these short stories as the objects of the research. First, the female characters in
these short stories are German who derived from different social status. Second, these female
characters experienced conflicts caused by the people around them. Third, all of the male
characters in these short stories are Japanese. Fourth, according to Ochi Haruo (in Wibawarta,
2003:216) three female characters who appeared in these short stories, Erisu, Marie, and Ida
are described showing deep grief (urei) on their faces.
To analyze the conflicts contained in these short stories, the writer uses the
structuralism approach, which deals with characters, setting, plot, and conflicts. The method
of the research is descriptive method.
The result of the research shows that Erisu, Marie, and Ida suffered internal and
external conflicts. They all suffered internal conflicts in form of sadness. Erisu experienced
sadness, followed by anxiety and depression. Marie experienced sadness followed by hatred.
Ida experienced sadness followed by a sense of distress. Erisu is the weakest female
characters, then followed by Marie, and Ida. The external conflicts of the female characters
are caused by their difference in social status.
