Abstract

This thesis discussed about the philosophy of samurai sword arts and bushido in kendoka character education. Philosophy of samurai sword arts contained principles of samurai sword arts that were influenced by Zen Buddhism meditation which educated the kendoka spiritually and ethically. Meanwhile, the bushido was a samurai code of ethics which contained elements of Zen Buddhism and it was also combined with Shinto and Confucian that educated the kendoka spiritually, mentally and ethically. This study aimed to describe of the philosophy of samurai sword arts and bushido that was influenced by Zen Buddhism in character education of kendoka. In writing and formulating this thesis, the writer used descriptive methods and the data were collected by studying the literature that refered to various sources presenting information and discussion about the art of samurai sword, bushido, Zen Buddhist and kendo. This study found that in kendoka character education, philosophy of samurai sword arts and bushido educated the kendoka mentally, spiritually and ethically. Mentally, persistence was courage. In spiritual perspective, it brought composure. Ethically, what it taught were respect, eagerness and discipline.
